MAAP SETS STAGE FOR STUDENT RESEARCH & EXTENSION PROGRAMS

Hosts UNESCO Accreditation of PAEPI Student Clubs cum
First National PAEPI, PHILARM and PFUCCA Student Researchers and
Awarding of Best Research and Extension Practices


            The field of research and extension among the ranks of students has started to gain ground as the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific ( MAAP President VADM Eduardo Ma R. Santos, AFP ( Ret)- the foirmer FOIC of the Philippine Navy  in uniform as shown on photo below beside UNESCO Dr Macer) and the  Bataan Peninsula State University ( BPSU President Dr Delfin Magpantay) in collaboration with :  Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementers, Inc (PAEPI President Dr Angelica Baylon),  Philippine Association of Research Managers (PhilARM President Dr Reynaldo Castro) and the Philippine Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Chapters and Associations (PFUCCA Chairman Prof Serafin Arviola of PNU).  A groundbreaking activity for student researchers and extensionists was organized, coinciding with the accreditation ceremony of PAEPI Student Clubs in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Clubs, April 26-27, 2011 at the MAAP Campus in Kamaya Point, Mariveles, Bataan.
            The 2-day activity was anchored on the trust and faith of the various professional organizations to the role of students in advancing research and extension in the country. The event also served as the grand launching of the BPSU and MAAP PAEPI Student Clubs as recognized UNESCO Clubs, joining the first 10 founding members who came  from different parts of the country. “I felt extreme fulfillment as I see our students display passion towards community work, extension and research. The accreditation of our pilot PAEPI student chapters (BPSU and MAAP) only makes it more exciting to continue our efforts in advocating the foundational beliefs of PAEPI, which is community service with a heart!”, says Dr. Angelica Baylon ( photo in the middle), the  MAAP’s Director of Research and Extension Services  and PAEPI President in an interview.
            Adding to the prominence and  pioneering event was the presence of UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines Director Ms Jeanette Tuason  ( photo from extreme left) and the Regional Adviser in Social and Human Sciences for Asia and the Pacific (RUSHSAP),UNESCO Bangkok, Dr. Daryl Macer ( photo on the middle) and gracing the occasion as well was the PHILARM President Dr Reynaldo Castro (photo on the extreme right). With the theme “Implementation of Research-based Extension Program towards Attainment of Millennium Development Goals”, MAAP trailblazes the said event as it gathered diverse 110 particpants representing delegates from different colleges and universities around the country. The 2-day activities were  participated by the following institutions club advisers with their students: Bataan Peninsula State University PAEPI Junior with Club Adviser: Dr. Elizabeth A. Joson ,  Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific with Club Adviser: Dr Angelica M Baylon ,  Elpidio Quirino High School  UNESCO Club with Club Adviser : Mr. John Carlo Docto, r Lyceum UNESCO Club  with Club Adviser : Kristine Joyce Laroco, Philippine Normal University,  UNESCO Club with Club Adviser:  Mr. Angelito Veloso, PNU-Center for Teacher and Learning Unesco Club  with Club Adviser: Mr. Aaron Santos, University of Northern Philippines CHRDPE Volunteer Corps with Club Adviser:  Dr. Fatima Ricamora amd Aurora Provincial Employment Sports Culture and Arts for Youth Development Office (PESCAYDO) with Club Adviser:  Mr. Sherwin Taay, President of PFUCCA.
            VAdm Eduardo Ma. R. Santos (Ret), MAAP President welcomed the participants in a warm opening program prepared and hosted by the academy. Dr. Angelica Baylon, MAAP Director for  Research and Extension Services, emphasized in her speech that the activities were realized and made possible because of the admirable leadership of VAdm Santos, who always supports the activities of students in partnership with other organizations  UNESCO Exec Director Tuason congratulated the various organizations, , for making the said event successful. According to her, pushing through some extension activities is so hard but the organization makes it possible.  Ms Tuazon  awarded the accreditation certificate of the two new family members of UNESCO Clubs Philippines : MAAP-PAEPI Student Chapter led by its President 1CL Xavier Yumang and BPSU-PAEPI  Student Chapter with Mr. John Mark Caraan as their President. The respective Certificates of Accreditation and plaques from UNESCO were given to the new member organizations as a symbol of partnership for future collaborative UNESCO and PAEPI Student Chapters’ projects. In the speech delivered by Dr. Daryl Macer, he discussed the problem of Mass Killing which  is the focus of his project this year. He encouraged all the delegates to support the project so as to stop this unethical activity. He added that sooner or later, this problem will be added on UNESCO’s main agenda.   In lieu with this, he distributed free copies of his books on bioethics. Dr. Macer is a member of the IUBS Bioethics program, and Founder-Director of the Eubios Ethics Institute (EEI ). EEI is a non-profit group that aims to stimulate the international discussion of ethical issues and to teach the use of  technology in ways consistent with "good life" (eu-bios)) . It aims at an integrated and cross-cultural approach to bioethics, and at building up an international network. He has published over 10 authored books, over 20 edited books, and approximately 200 academic papers.
            The UNESCO Clubs  held their Assembly meeting and also discussed the country’s participation in International Youth Day (IYD) in Vietnam . Training session for the students extensionists  focused on Advanced Leadership Concepts with emphasis on community extension. Dr. Perla B. Estrella, BPSU-Associate Director for Extension Services and a licensed Psychologist, discussed about the different character of a good person and leader. Another BPSU Instructor, Mrs. Kimberly Cabrera-Rivera, who was former BPSU student leader and a regional nominee for the  Outstanding students of the Philippines, helped pull out the leadership principles and values among the student-participants. In the research presentation, student extensionists from various clubs presented their student-led extension programs to the panel created for evaluation of project effectiveness. Dr. Reynaldo Castro, the PhilARM Chair served as the Chairman of the panel of judges. The oral presentations showcased the students’ creativity and skills in taking part to their respective institution’s research and extension programs. The students who topped the competitions were: Ms. Judith A. Oria (First Place), from the Bataan Peninsula State University who presented her research entitled Herbal Soap and Perfume Making for Possible Income Generating Project ; 4CL Jo-Mari Hieras and 4CL Kristofer Bang(Second Place) from Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific with their research title: Impact of  MAAP Tree Planting Projects to the community and the environment and   Ms. Leah Pearl Eugenio (Third Place) from Bataan Peninsula State University reported her research about Squash Noodle Fortified with Malunggay and Bangus Bone. Dr. Elizabeth A. Joson , Director of  BPSU Extension Services, and Ms. Janice W. Vergara, statistician and  MAAP-Department of Research and Extension Services Staff served as crtique for the 15 presenters. The 2-day groundbreaking activity ended with a fellowship night at MAAP’s Aguinaldo Hall. MAAP cadettes who are also members of both the UNESCO Clubs and PAEPI Student clubs wowed the delegates with their special numbers which include a modern dance number and a fire dance exhibition by the cadets . A ceremonial boodle fight was shared by all the student delegates who capped another historic event hosted by MAAP and BPSU.  MAAP as host also toured the delegates at its amazing  campus  and had actually experienced its state of the art simulator  found only in MAAP Philippines , Canada and Australia.. Aboard the MAAP airconditioned bus , the guests also toured some historical places in Bataan like  Mount Samat , to the delight of the participants. Thanks to MAAP for having hosted such a productive and enjoyable event
